The goals of the program are to ensure that family members understand how the disease of addiction impacts their loved ones and themselves. With an understanding of the disease process, it becomes much easier to manage emotions, explore options, create healthy expectations and boundaries and develop recovery plans.

To that end, only family and friends that the patient approves to attend the Family Wellness Program will be invited to participate. We uphold the patients’ wishes regarding their contact with loved ones during treatment, which includes family members who would be on campus to participate in this program.

Rather, as witnesses to their loved one’s struggles, family members need to examine ways in which the disease has affected them. They need to attend to their own wounds and discover ways to mend.

Further, studies indicate that when the family participates in recovery opportunities like the Family Wellness Program, Al-Anon and Nar-Anon, everyone benefits. Family health is significantly improved and relapse rates for the addicted person are lowered.

By attending the Family Wellness Program, you and your loved ones will be better equipped to handle the transitions to come and more knowledgeable about what to expect when your loved one discharges from Father Martin’s Ashley.

On Friday, you have the opportunity to meet with your loved one and his or her counselor. On Saturday, your family will participate in a group therapy session together. On Sunday, your family will work together on a Family Recovery Plan. You will also have time together during meals and breaks. Through these different activities, your family will be able to express concerns and ask questions with the guidance of counselors. You will also have the opportunity to discuss expectations and develop plans together to maintain family recovery.

Each patient’s counselor and the clinical team work to create personalized plans that will help each Ashley graduate continue into successful recovery. Often, appointments for continued care are scheduled for the patient so they have their first round of their Continuing Care plan already set up for them. Will this program do more harm than good?

Addiction in the home causes disruption to the extent that children are affected. Children are intuitive, but often do not have the developmental capacity to make sense of what they are feeling. When we pretend that everything is fine when it is not, children can become confused and have problems with reality testing and trust later on in life.

Children from chemically dependent families are at the highest risk for developing substance abuse problems of their own. Additionally, even if they don’t know exactly what has been happening in the family, children often have a stress response. Some act out, some withdraw and some take on the responsibility of making things okay in the home again. They may exhibit symptoms of depression and anxiety, have higher health care costs than children from non-addicted families, have problems with abstraction and conceptual thinking, and score lower on tests measuring verbal ability.

The good news is that these children may benefit from adult efforts to help them and can learn coping and resiliency skills that protect and support them.

In the Rainbow of Hope Children’s Program, information is shared in a way that allows children to better understand addiction in general, explore their feelings and investigate ways to care for themselves. We follow their lead and do not overwhelm them with information.

What will you tell my children about me and my addiction?

We do not share with your children any personal information about you or your addiction. Rather, we allow a space for the children to safely gain knowledge about addiction in general and to brainstorm ways that they can take good care of themselves whenever they are dealing with life’s difficulties. We encourage the children to keep hope and love alive because recovery is real.

The children learn enough about addiction to be able to understand that it is neither their fault nor their responsibility to fix. They also are given some basic information about the genetic qualities of this disease. They learn that they are at greater risk of being harmed by drugs of abuse and, therefore, need to avoid them.

Additionally, the children are given information about what recovery can mean for them. They learn that when we reach out to helpful, trustworthy grown ups and friends it can make hard times easier. Problem solving techniques are reviewed. Children are encouraged to stop, think, act, use their resources and review their decisions. We also encourage the children to explore ways in which to remove themselves from unhealthy situations and to be assertive. The children brainstorm ways to care for themselves physically and emotionally, recognizing that there are many choices to make when we are feeling sad, upset or scared. Some choices are healthier than others. We practice healthy behaviors within the program and encourage each other. We celebrate the unique skills that each child brings with them, noting that these strengths can be helpful when having tough times.

Discussions allow for specific concerns and questions to be addressed. Many of the adult participants of the Children’s Program find relief in knowing that they are not alone and that other families share similar experiences. They also express thanks for the opportunity to learn and practice new skills and to connect more strongly with their children.

There is no easy answer to this question because insurance policies and procedures vary widely. Most insurance companies subcontract alcohol and addiction treatment to companies that provide mental-health case management. A case management company will review information from a patient's initial assessment to determine what level of care it deems medically necessary. Ashley provides the medical assessment information to the case management company, so that insurance benefits can then be determined.

This means that even if the patient's health insurance provides benefits for inpatient substance abuse treatment, the insurance company may not cover the recommended course of treatment at Ashley.

We work hard on our patients' behalf to provide the information required by their insurers and managed-care providers.

Co-occurring conditions can be managed as long as they are stable and do not require hospitalization. For example, we can manage patients with diabetes, hypertension, depression, and bipolar disorder as long as these conditions are stable enough not to interfere with the patient's participation in the program.

Ashley hires only experienced counselors for clinical care, and most have been with us at least eight years. Counselors are certified by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors. Clinical counselors in the Relapse Program are trained and certified in the Gorski Relapse Method, and some of our counselors hold counseling licenses with private practice privileges. In the Family Wellness program, all counselors hold a master's degree in social work and are trained in family therapy.

Ashley's counselor-to-patient ratio is one certified counselor for about every eight or fewer patients. This assures that patients receive individual attention from counselors who are familiar with each patient's needs. Patients normally meet individually with counselors up to twice a week, and in group therapy daily (Monday through Friday).

In addition to counseling, medical, and administrative staff, Ashley employees provide food and housekeeping services and maintain our buildings and grounds.

What are the accommodations?

While at Ashley, you will stay in comfortable, attractive rooms with bath-- most are semi-private.
Prior to admission, we will verify eligibility and obtain benefit information from your insurance company. Providing a benefit is available for treatment at Ashley, our utilization review staff works on the patient’s behalf to advocate for the maximum coverage for treatment allowed under their individual insurance plan. Insurance benefits are available based on your insurance plan’s specific medical necessity criteria being met.

For insurers that Ashley is not in network with and if an out of network benefit is available, we submit all forms and paperwork on behalf of the patient to ensure that they receive the appropriate reimbursement for authorized services without having to complete extensive paperwork.

Mass is held daily — attendance is optional. An optional ecumenical service is offered on weekends and there are two spiritually-based lectures per week.

Many people look at inpatient treatment for alcoholism or drug addiction as a last resort, when in reality it is often the most effective first step in a recovery journey. Inpatient treatment allows a person to take the time to truly look within and explore the roots of their disease and destructive behaviors without the distractions of daily life. This intensive treatment experience helps patients evaluate personal issues, relationships and behavior patterns in order to make healthy changes in priorities and lifestyles, which can lead to a more promising future after completing treatment at Ashley. The relationships that form in the patient community are also often a valuable tool in furthering recovery.

Our inpatient treatment combines education, medical attention and clinical care for professional, ongoing, consistent support for recovery. We are also better able to assess and treat co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions that may affect sobriety and health.

Are there visitation hours?

After the first week of treatment, Ashley patients may have visitors on Sundays from 1-4 p.m. Please see our Visitation Information page for full details.

What is the environment at the Ashley like?

Ashley is a serene, beautiful place to come to for treatment. While we are not a religious organization, a sense of spirituality is an important component in 12-step recovery programs. We encourage spiritual development, and treat all of our patients in a dignified, respectful manner.

Therefore, our housekeeping staff cleans and straightens patient rooms, regularly changes bedding and provides fresh towels, kind words and encouragement.

In addition, we wash and dry each patient’s personal, washable laundry for them up to three times a week and deliver it back clean and folded. Outside dry cleaning services are also available, for a fee. The washable laundry service is free of charge for all patients.

Are there gender-specific groups?

Yes, gender-specific groups and 12-step meetings are held throughout treatment as part of our Men's Track and Women’s Track to discuss issues specific to those participating. Why is Ashley Media Free?

"Media Free" refers to the Ashley policy that personal phones/PDAs, music players, computers, televisions, non-recovery books, magazines, iPads and other media are prohibited while in treatment. It is our philosophy that patients must focus their full attention on the treatment program to get the maximum benefit from their time at Ashley. Books that pertain to recovery/sobriety are sold in the Oak Store on campus and are permitted during treatment. There are a wide variety of activities available for recreation and reflection.

Ashley offers a weekend (three-day, Friday-Sunday) Family Wellness Program for adult family members of Ashley patients. It is preferred that the patient be in treatment at the time that the family participates in the Family Wellness Program. The program includes educational lectures, group discussion, and therapy sessions. Ashley’s Family Wellness Program is held every weekend on our campus in Havre de Grace, MD.

For children, we offer the Rainbow of Hope Children’s Program. This Saturday program helps children learn about addiction as a disease and how/why it has affected their family. This plan is created with input from the patient’s counselor, the Medical staff, the Continuing Care staff, the patient, and, when appropriate, the patient’s family and home counselor. A Continuing Care plan always includes participation in a 12-step recovery program like AA or NA and alumni events, and can include transitional living recommendations such as a stay at a halfway house, individual/family counseling, and outpatient treatment.
I thought they were there for 28 days. I heard panic in their voice. What should I do?

When a person enters treatment there are many emotions they are feeling such as anger, relief, pain, hurt, shame, fear. The clinical and medical staffs work with each person to assist them in coping with these feelings. For some, this is the first time in a long time that they have had to deal with emotions without the use of alcohol and/or drugs.

As much as it pains you, please do not pick them up from treatment. Reassure your loved one of your concern for them. When you are off the phone with them, please call the assigned counselor and share with them what just happened. Their counselor will work with your loved one to process these emotions. The counselor will be in touch with you to continue to process.
